Launched in 2015, Ethereum is a decentralized software platform that enables developers to build blockchain applications that are called Distributed Applications (ĐApps) and to create SmartContracts. Ideally, the network would operate without any downtime, fraud, control or interference from a third party. The platform is also the basis for its own virtual currency, Ether, a type of crypto token that fuels the network. While the Bitcoin blockchain is used to track ownership of digital currency (bitcoins), the Ethereum blockchain focuses on running the programming code of any decentralized application.
